Fulfilling God's call

Just a random thought.. What is fulfilling God's call for my life? I was thinking about this question at a very random moment on a very random day (well, not exactly random 'cos today's the day that I actually finished all my deadlines for the week. Next deadline's on next Wed so I have quite a lot of time to think about this kind of question - the fact of which makes me feel very sad and remorseful that I only think of them based on external circumstances when I knew I should be thinking of them regardless of external circumstances. Ah well! Forgive me Lord!)
Has it occurred to anyone that part of fulfilling God's call for ourselves is actually helping others fulfill God's call? This is rather counter-intuitive to me even though it's actually very obvious.  You know in economics, we learn about scarcity and that most goods are rival, i.e. the consumption of the good by one person actually makes the good less available to another. Now, if we think of God's call as a good (a good is defined as anything that benefits oneself), this is actually counter-intuitive. Consuming the good known as God's call requires that we help another person consume his God's call.
Now, to give a scenario that probably has more link to this God's call we're thinking about. Let's simplify and tangify (defined in MY dictionary as to make something tangible) God's call to being a shepherd. In essence, being a shepherd is really helping another person be a shepherd but it's sad how common it is for me to see being a shepherd as a rival good. We tend to think that someone being a shepherd actually means a less chance of being a shepherd ourselves. Note this is really true and valid ONLY IF the assumption that there will be the same number of sheep holds. Sadly enough, our feelings and thoughts or even sometimes our behavior which may sound something like 'got enough shepherd what.. everyone is shepherded what.. or where got sheep for me to shepherd?' in response to Pastor Jeff's challenge of being a shepherd are actually a result of believing in that assumption..
BUT
God's Word says that the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. God's kingdom will advance and there'll be more and more sheep who want to drink of this water that gives eternal life but the workers are few. People who actually understand what is a shepherd's heart are few. If we have viewed being a shepherd as what we see above, we are probably one of those who want to be shepherds but who don't really understand a shepherd's heart. Really God's call is not just a non-rival good, it is a good that when consumed makes the good more available for others to consume. Such is the extent of God's love that our true need, one of which is fulfilling God's call, actually works like that! This is His way of shouting 'My love is for one and all!' - a very personal love but a love that involves everyone. Truly, only you God can engineer such a wonderful product!
